Trauma-aware content design review

Be confident your website content is written for everyone, and not retraumatising anyone.

Trauma, grief and stress can impact how your audience reads your content. More than 1 in 4 adult Australians are impacted by complex trauma¹.

These people are more likely to become overwhelmed by dense, poorly designed content, abandon lengthy processes or simply give up on a webpage that was intended to provide support.

For you, this could lead to more phone calls, lower compliance, or a decrease in trust and customer satisfaction. Maybe your regulating authority has told you your content needs improving but you’re not sure where to start.

We have the experience and training to make sure your content is not only accessible, inclusive and best practice – we will also ensure your content is safe, empathetic and clear.

Benefits of a trauma-awareness review

When you design for trauma awareness, you design a better experience for everyone.

We review 10 of your web pages serving people experiencing trauma, grief or stress against trauma-aware principles.

You’ll know whether:

  • your content is trustworthy and transparent, or retraumatising
  • you’re making the most of user feedback and other data
  • users feel empowered with choice
  • your content considers the culture, gender, disability and history of your users.

Good design is trauma-aware. We always apply best practice content design, accessibility and experience design standards to our work. We can show you how to apply this to yours.

Why True North Content

We think good content considers people who carry trauma, grief and stress with them every day. Those experiences affect how people regulate their nervous system and take in information. What may seem simple and straightforward to you might be overwhelming to a person with a dysregulated nervous system.

Trauma-aware content is a new and growing discipline and one that we’re investing heavily in.

Members of our content design team have trained with Blue Knot Foundation, Australia’s National Centre of Excellence for Complex Trauma, and our writers and editors complete our internal trauma-aware training. We pair that knowledge with empathy and our plain language and content design expertise.

We can help you feel confident that the content you publish is trauma-aware and you are not unintentionally retraumatising your readers or website users.
